The paintings in this series convey the idea of two separate realities—the fleeting clarity that one moment can impart and the ambiguity that frequently follows. An evocative line from a song or a poem provides my starting point. Words often capture an emotion that brings us to a very raw place of authenticity and for that moment we awaken. The words grab us and won’t let go. Gradually, layers of divergent realities and distractions fragment the message.

I use the stripe as a means of building these layers with various degrees of transparency and opacity; slowly accumulating bands of depth and surface, clarity and obscurity.  The role of the stripe comes from a long-standing attachment to its elegance and clean structure.  The stripe finds its way into all of my work, whether prominent or hidden.
